I know I’ve said it before, but I like the story. Dragon Con is magic, and that’s the simple truth of it. Mrs. VaVaVoom, long before she was my wife, and I went to our first Dragon Con back in 2006. We only brought one costume apiece. She already had a Kaylee costume, so I pieced together a Simon Tam costume to go with hers. Among our travels at the con, we met Adam Hughes. Adam was quite taken with Mrs. VaVaVoom’s Kaylee costume. We saw a print we wanted (actually the hardcover cover to Serenity: Those Left Behind) and I left to find an ATM to get cash for it. When I came back, Adam Hughes had a proposition for us. He liked our costumes so much that he took our pictures for a project that Joss Whedon had just contacted him about. He ended up giving us the print for free (pictured, and you can see his signature on it) because we posed for him. The project? Well we wouldn’t find out for some time, but it was the cover for Serenity: Better Days #3. If you look at Mrs. VaVaVoom’s Kaylee costume and what Kaylee is wearing on the cover, you’ll see they’re very similar. The picture you see above is of us with Adam Hughes and his now wife Alison Sohn. Some of the nicest people we’ve ever met.
