getinthehandbasket asked: exCUSE me? Why is a fat joke okay to post on a Firefly blog, with fat people as the butt of the joke? I understand it's a line from the show - however the implication of the way it's posted here implies that having fat children is a horrible thing. Inara said it sarcastically, like "I wish you joy." The post, though, presents it as "I wish you the most horrible thing I can think of - FAT children." This is Not Okay. Please don't spread fat hate through this blog. Thanks!
Hello.
First of all, I’m sorry for posting something that offended you. I understand that fat jokes are absolutely not okay and that fat shame is a horrible thing to do to people. But I don’t think that’s the context of the post.
In many old cultures, “fat” meant “wealthy.” It meant they had a surplus - enough to eat and more. I believe that “I wish you hundreds of fat children” does mean “I wish you joy” sarcastically. “I wish you such a good life that you are able to afford hundreds of children and feed them all and have more.” I don’t think the implication is “the worst thing ever is to have a fat child.”
On the other hand, implication does not magically make it better. If after this apology and explanation, you still want the post deleted, please message me again and I will do so.
Again, I apologize for posting the submission without thinking. And I apologize for offending you (and anyone else who might be in the same position).
Thank you for bringing it up to me.
